What we know:

  • As an energybender, Eris can create these portals at will, though they are usually confined to one world.
    • There are some cases, such as in Ling's chapter, where she is able to follow the distant presence of the gang's energy in the spiritual place of the Library.
  • The vortex loop was an accident, because Eris could not fully control its creation and the energies of our five characters, Eris, and Kin became caught up in it.

What we need to work out:

  • What are the vortexes behavior -violent or docile- and why?
    • In Burning Earth and A Breath of Fresh Air, they are described as violent, but elsewhere they are more passive.
  • Are others physically affected by the vortex? Can they or objects also pass through at any point?

More thoughts?

Factual correction:
What we know:

  • The vortexes are portals created by an energybender to serve as a method of transportation to wherever it is they want to go. Could be anywhere and any world.
  • Eris always knew about the existence of other universes, though never traveled there. The fact that she could sense the team's energy is Ling's chapter had nothing to do with the vortexes, but just because the library is part of the Spirit World which is the one constant thing in all the stories involved. As such, she can sense the team in the library -but only there- regardless of the world they're in.
  • The vortex loop was an accident because Eris was highly emotional at the time she was giving her speech to her father and the team said things similar to her, thus connecting their energies to her.

My opinion for the rest:

  • It doesn't make sense to have the vortexes be violent. The vortexes are just modes of transportation tied to specific energies. On themselves, they're not a weapon. They're designed to instantly bring someone from point A to point B. It's designed to go through time and space. Why would it then be able to affect material things in a specific world like slashing through metal? That's not it's purpose.
  • Only the connected people can be affected by the vortex. Since Eris created them as an energybender, it needs to be energy related. Since only five specific persons were dragged through it, it also needs to be connected to them. However, other people are not connected to it, thus unless they are somehow tied to one of the people that are connected to it -let's say by at least holding their hand or something- I don't see how they could use a portal that has nothing to do with their specific energy. Same with objects.

Sorry if this sounds a little general, but I also think the vortexes should be passive in nature and be sensed by specific people related to them. Those are the two 'characteristics' that sound most natural, imo.

My reasoning is, the more realistic nature of the vortexes is the one you can put the least effort into explaining. I.e. A violent vortex requires more 'added excuses' to exist, while leaving it as 'a passive method for transportation' is simpler and what one would more likely expect of a portal. The latter also places greater focus on the purpose of these vortexes in the fanon itself, which is to connect worlds and offer a means for characters to travel between them. And just as the worlds are 'personal' connections to the characters, so should the energies imo.
